Tiger Woods could be golf's No. 1 after Accenture Match Plan Championship

February 22 -- Hard to believe, but after going some 15 months without a win, Tiger Woods could reclaim the No. 1 spot atop the official world golf rankings with a victory at this week’s Accenture Match Plan Championship.

Lots of “ifs.” Third-ranked Woods would ascend to the throne he held for 281 consecutive weeks if the current best player in the world, Lee Westwood, loses in the first or second round, and if Martin Kaymer (No. 2) bows out before the final, according to Golf Channel's Randall Mell. Could happen, but those are some pretty significant “ifs” for a golfer who’s still talking about making “progress” with his new golf swing.

On the other hand, Westwood has yet to make it out of the second round in the 10 WGC-Match Play events he’s entered. “I’m wondering what Friday looks like in this tournament,” he told the PGA Tour’s Helen Ross. “I played pretty well here and [someone] had one of those hot days against me.

Must play well. “There are no easy games. You have the top 64 players in the world,” Westwood added. “You get lucky in this format, but you also know you have to play well."

Kaymer’s chances of toppling Westwood are slim as well. He could take the crown with a win or second-place finish, but it would depend on Westwood’s week. All three players, along with Phil Mickelson, are the top seeds in their brackets.

They’ll be duking it out on the course and in the NBC/Golf Channel booth as well. Read how Johnny Miller and Nick Faldo will vie for airtime in the new “State of the Game Live” broadcast.
