Hunters Lane girls get some revenge

BRENTWOOD — After back-to-back season-ending losses to Hillsboro, Hunters Lane turned the tables Monday night.

The Lady Warriors controlled their Region 6-AAA semifinal at Brentwood from the start for a 65-52 win.

Hunters Lane (23-5) will face Ravenwood, a 39-37 winner over Cane Ridge, in Wednesday's final at 7 p.m. Hunters Lane and Ravenwood are assured of a berth in Saturday's sectional.

"We want to win the region, but it feels good to know, win or lose, we'll still be playing," said St. Louis signee Erika Cook, who scored 14 points.

Tennessee signee Isabelle Harrison picked up her third foul a minute into the second quarter for Hillsboro (18-11). Despite her absence, the Lady Burros stayed close and then cut the margin to 46-45 on her basket with 5:41 left.

Hunters Lane went on a 13-4 run highlighted by a Deandrea Sawyers 3-pointer, and hit six of eight free throws in the final 1:20.

Sawyers scored 18 points for Hunters Lane.

Nicole Bowers led Hillsboro with 17 points and Harrison finished with 16.

Ravenwood 39, Cane Ridge 37: Jayne Rice, all alone under the basket following Logan Hodskins' 3-point heave, grabbed the rebound and put it in as time expired.

"It was a left-handed layup. I've done it a billion times," the junior said. "I thought it was coming out, but it rolled in."

The basketball sealed the first region final appearance for Ravenwood (24-8).

"I think, wanting to win so badly, we forgot to do the little things," Cane Ridge Coach Joanne Tribue said. "We had too many turnovers. We didn't hit our free throws. But this is our third year, and we made it to the semifinals of the region. Our kids have got to hold their heads up."

Hodskins finished with 12 points for Ravenwood. Cane Ridge (18-11) got 13 points from Jadah Fite.

Ravenwood defeated Cane Ridge 46-13 on Dec. 2.
