Bergtraum still No. 1 in PSAL girls AA bracket

Bergtraum, 12-time defending city champion, look to face greater competition in PSAL 'AA' girls playoffs

In seasons past, the PSAL "AA" girls basketball playoffs was a one-team race with Bergtraum competing only against history. This year's pursuit, which starts Wednesday, isn't exactly wide open, but it should be competitive.

No. 1 Bergtraum (18-3), the 12-time defending city champion, struggled to beat Kennedy in two regular-season games.

As usual with the seedings, there was plenty of drama as to who would get the No. 4 seed and a spot on Bergtraum's side of the bracket. That distinction went to No. 4 Kennedy (16-8), allowing No. 2 South Shore (20-5) and No. 3 Francis Lewis (16-6) somewhat easier routes to the Garden for the city final.

"No disrespect to Mr. G (Bergtraum coach Ed Grezinsky) but in the years that I've been here this is one of his weakest teams that I've seen," said South Shore coach Anwar Gladden. "At the same time, they've been winning close games and they're still the 12-time champions. But I just like our team's chances with our talent level and depth."
