Pacquiao throwing mixed signals on retirement and Margarito fight

Is Manny Pacquiao retiring after his fight against Antonio Margarito on November 13?

If you've read my article titled 'Don't hold your breath on Pacquiao leaving boxing any time soon', then you already know my take on this. Veteran boxing writer and colleague Michael Marley believes the same thing and feels that there's too much money on the table for Pacquiao to walk away from. After talking to several insiders and following the news wire together with filtering gossip from inside info, it seems that there's more to this retirement talk than meets the eye.

Curiously a person close to Pacquiao approached me after reading the commentary I wrote on his retirement. Although not part of his training team, this person has been around Pacquiao for years and has traveled with the pound for pound king everywhere from Manila to LA, England to Dallas and everywhere else in between. This fellow wanted me to put my money where my mouth is regarding my belief that Pacquiao won't be retiring after his fight against Margarito. Now, I am not one to back down from a good bet, but I'm talking to a guy with some inside edge here, so I'm not about to be suckered into a sure loss, so I did some handicapping. After some discussion, we ended up with a bet that if Pacquiao fights again even once in 2011 and 2012, I win. I believe if Pacquiao is to pull a fast one on all of us and announce his retirement after the Margarito fight, that it would be extremely difficult for him not to do a fight in the next 2 years.

Asked why he strongly felt that Pacquiao was done with boxing, our friend mentioned Pacquiao's passion with his new job- something trainer Freddie Roach has alluded to himself. We discussed several other factors, but long story short, this guy believes Pacquiao will hang it up in favor of public service.

For the record, Pacquiao's most recent statement to the press during his recent media conference call was: "No, the political career has not affected my boxing career. I have time for politics and I have time for boxing. Right now my focus is still into boxing.  Once I get into training there is full focus on the fight so I am ready. No retirement. Not yet. I can still fight."

But recently, GMA TV from the Philippines interviewed Pacquiao's mom Dionesia who said she will be ringside to watch her son fight for the first time ever. Dionesia or "Pac Mom" as our buddy Marley calls her, couldn't take the sight of her son getting pummeled in the ring, which is why she has opted not to watch his fights live. Some say it's also part superstition. So why is Pac Mom going to be ringside for this fight for the first time? According to her, she said she spoke to her said who told her that this would be his final fight. "I said if this is really your final fight, then I'll be with you in the ring. But promise me this will be your last fight. Promise me. So yes, I am going to be there to support him this time around," Pacquiao's mom said.

And the plot thickens.
