Oregon, Auburn beware of "road" to BCS

The BCS rankings will be updated later today so it remains unknown whether the Oregon Ducks or Auburn Tigers will be at the top. One thing each team should be aware of though is the danger of going on the road as the top-ranked team.

Yesterday the BCS's top team, Oklahoma, was upset on the road in Big 12 play by the Missouri Tigers. Oklahoma was never supposed to lose to the Tigers of course. Bob Stoops had never lost a game against Missouri until yesterday. The Sooners were a team that had put together the most impressive results this season, including victories over Texas, Florida State, and Air Force. They had become the team to beat in the Big 12 and just like that, just six days after being named the top team in the BCS rankings, a road game drew a crack in their wooden tires on the Sooner Schooner.

Oklahoma clearly had not learned a lesson from the previous two weeks.

A week ago it was Ohio State who held the top ranking in the AP poll, only to lose a grip at the top by losing on the road at Wisconsin, and allowing the Big Ten race to now go through East Lansing. The Buckeyes did not last very long at the top of the rankings either.

Just one week before Ohio State's defeat it was Alabama who went down after holding a firm grip on the highest rankings since last season. The Crimson Tide failed to mount a comeback against South Carolina on the road, beginning this new pattern of bad luck for top-ranked teams.

No matter which team, Oregon or Auburn, takes the top billing in the BCS ranking later today, and most people believe it will be one of the two (apologies to Boise State fans), college football fans can already wave a flag of caution for each team this coming week. Oregon travels to Los Angeles to take on a USC team that is very capable of pulling the upset. Auburn will travel to Mississippi to take on the Rebels. Can either team avoid a letdown?
