Jockey Garrett Gomez, who was shaken up when his mount, Indy Bouquet, broke down in the sixth race today, will be able to keep his commitments to ride in eight of the 14 Breeders' Cup World Championship races at Churchill Downs on Friday and Saturday, November 5th and 6th.
A three-year-old filly by A. P. Indy, Indy Bouquet is out of the Storm Cat mare, Show Me the Roses, a half-sister to Champion Two-Year-Old Colt and successful sire, Johannesburg. Indy Bouquet was making only her third career start, in a one-mile turf contest for maiden fillies and mares.
According to Garrett Gomez's agent, Ron Anderson, "the filly warmed up good and everything looked fine. She just took a bad step. It was an unfortunate accident." Indy Bouquet, who was owned by WinStar Farm, "went wrong" and then fell as she was going around the far turn. She sustained a compound fracture of her left front cannon bone and was vanned off the track. It was later announced that she had been euthanized because of the severity of her injuries.
Gomez was brought to Audubon Hospital in Louisville for evaluation, after he complained of discomfort in his right shoulder from the brunt of the fall. According to Anderson, "they took an X-ray and the results came back negative. Garrett is fine and in good spirits and he will ride Friday."
Among Garrett Gomez's mounts during the Breeders' Cup series is the highly regarded Arch colt, Blame, who has been assigned morning line odds of 9-2 for Saturday's $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic-G1, in which he will compete against 11 rivals, including Lookin at Lucky, Quality Road, and of course, Zenyatta.
